  Innovations in Treatments Using Mesenchyma
Stem Cells (MSCs)
   Stem cells, specifically Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) or
blood forming cells, are widely accepted as a standard treatment
tor blood related diseases or other conditions consequence from
treatment such as brain tumors in children. Another type of stem
cell called Messenchymal stem cells is still in clinical trails. However,
if we follow the progress of research and clinical trails on stem
cells, most of them are from MSCs.
   One of the sources of Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) is the
Wharton's jelly, which is found on the umbilical cord tissue.  It has
been found that the cells cultured in the laboratory from this source
can be used for several medical applications. It is also important
to note that such MSCs can be used with anyone in the fam'ily, as
they do not possess HLA class lI antigens.
    MSCs have been used in research and clinical trials and found
to have positive indications in the treatments such as:
   1. Cancer - MSCs have been found to release certain
substances that help to stop the growth of cancer cells, and in
some instances kill them all together.
    2.  Liver Disease - Trie MSCs from the umbilical cord have
been found to release substances which reduce and eliminate
inflammation and fibrosis in the liver. There is great hope that these
cells will be widely used for the treatment of liver diseases and
cirrhosis in the future.
   3. Blood Circulation and Heart Disease - Tissue
engineering technology and trials in animals has shown that it is
